From the moment I arrived at Shafer Vineyards, it was clear this would be an experience unlike any other. Located at 6154 Silverado Trail in Napa, Shafer is a place where luxury is felt, not forced, and where every detail is guided by intention, warmth, and deep respect for both the land and the guest.
An Arrival That Sets the Tone

I was greeted by Jared, Vice President of Hospitality, and wow, from stepping out of my SUV to walking toward the top of the stairs, the experience immediately felt immersive. There was a sense of calm, care, and personalization that’s difficult to put into words.
As Jared shared with me, “I want people to feel valued when they visit Shafer, not like an afterthought.”
That philosophy is not just spoken, it’s lived.
I cannot say enough about Jared. His depth of knowledge, exceptional pairing instincts, and ability to connect wine, vineyard, and guest is among the best I’ve encountered across a lifetime of vineyard visits. Just as impressive is his down-to-earth presence and genuine care for both the Shafer brand and every visitor who walks through the gates.
The Tasting Begins: Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay

The tasting began outdoors with the 2024 Napa Valley Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, a beautiful introduction to Shafer’s style. Crisp, refreshing, and impeccably balanced, it offered subtle tropical notes layered with elegance. It was the kind of wine that instantly invites conversation and sets the pace for what’s to come.
As we talked, Jared shared insights into Shafer’s 250 total acres, and it’s impossible not to be taken aback by the beauty of the property. Birds chirping, lush greenery, sweeping vineyard views—it’s serene, grounding, and undeniably breathtaking.
The Hillside Select Experience: Wine Meets Culinary Art

I was then welcomed into an exceptional food pairing presentation as part of the Shafer Hillside Select Experience—a thoughtful and elevated approach to showcasing how wine and cuisine interact.
The wines that followed included:
- TD-9
- One Point Five
- Relentless
- Hillside Select 2021 – Stags Leap District
Each pour exceeded expectations, seamlessly reflecting the precision, depth, and passion behind Shafer’s winemaking philosophy.
Sitting Down with the Winemaker

One of the most meaningful moments of my visit was the opportunity to sit down with winemaker Elias Fernandez. Elias is humble, grounded, and deeply connected to both the craft and the people behind it.
When asked about Shafer’s pivotal moment, he reflected on the winery’s first 10 years, while also acknowledging the role of Robert Parker, whose outstanding review helped put Shafer on the global wine map.
We spoke candidly about the current downturn in the wine market and what lies ahead. Elias shared that many of the original clientele who built the brand have aged or passed on, and now the focus is on cultivating a new generation of disciples, wine lovers in their 30s and 40s who want authenticity, connection, and meaning.
As Jared perfectly put it, “Wine is marketed by who consumes it.”
Their goal is to be inviting, to expose people to the wines, and to share the real, everyday agricultural work behind winemaking.
Elias echoed this sentiment beautifully: “It takes a village to take a vine to the bottle.”
A Brand Rooted in Purpose and People

Shafer produces approximately 35,000 cases per year, and due to permit limitations, they host a limited number of visitors weekly. That makes it even more important that the quality of the visit matches the quality of the wine, and it absolutely does.
Jared emphasized that inspiration is essential. He took me up to the hillside, sharing how deeply connected he feels to the land and how therapeutic the process of winemaking is. The drive, the scenery, the discussion of vine placement and land use, it was all nothing short of breathtaking.
My Take

Shafer Vineyards is equally exclusive and obtainable, a rare balance in Napa Valley. The wines are world-class, the property is stunning, but it’s the people who make this place extraordinary.
That philosophy extends beautifully into their The Pour club membership, which is refreshingly guest-focused. There’s no annual fee, and members can select and mix the wines they love, with a minimum of three bottles per quarter. For those who prefer more flexibility, shipments can be adjusted to biannual or annual, all with a flat-rate shipping fee.
What stood out most is that the program isn’t about maximizing dollars; it’s about what’s important to you. Shafer wants the relationship to be a conversation, not a transaction, reinforcing that your experience always matters more than a return on the balance sheet.
Final Thoughts

Shafer Vineyards is not just a winery; it’s a destination where luxury meets authenticity, where every pour tells a story, and where guests are genuinely welcomed and inspired.
This is a must-visit Napa Valley winery, not only for its iconic wines and breathtaking setting, but for the exceptional people who bring it all to life. From the vineyard to the glass, Shafer delivers excellence without pretension, and that is what truly sets it apart.
