For years, taking a river cruise sat quietly on my vision board—a dream shaped by decades in the travel industry, countless trainings, and a deep desire to experience something both immersive and effortless. When the time finally came to choose, AmaWaterways was the clear decision. And from the moment I stepped aboard the AmaLyra, I knew I had made the right one.

I was greeted with warm smiles and guided to the Lark Lounge & Bar—the heart of the ship and a place that would quickly become a hub for connection, conversation, and evening entertainment. This particular sailing, a wine cruise through Normandy and Paris, was exactly why I had chosen this itinerary. It wasn’t just about the destinations—it was about the experience layered within them.

To my surprise, cabins were ready early. The moment I walked into mine, I did what every seasoned traveler does—I explored every detail. From the thoughtfully designed décor to the spacious bathroom and one of my favorite features, a Nespresso machine, everything was curated for comfort and ease. It felt elevated, but never overwhelming—luxury in a way that felt livable.

After a quick unpack, I made my way back to the lounge and met Victoria, our incredible Cruise Manager. Over the next seven nights, she proved to be nothing short of exceptional—managing over 90 guests with precision, warmth, and an ability to keep everything running seamlessly. The daily itinerary, accessible through the AmaWaterways app, ensured every guest stayed informed while still enjoying flexibility.

One of the standout touches was the scheduled meeting with Maitre D’ Yanko to review food allergies. This wasn’t treated as an afterthought—it was a priority. AmaWaterways takes dietary needs seriously, and that level of care carried through every meal, allowing guests to fully relax and enjoy the experience without concern.

That evening, I prepared for one of the most anticipated experiences onboard: The Chef’s Table. This intimate dining experience is included but must be reserved early due to limited seating. As I entered, I was welcomed warmly and seated at what would become the best table on the ship. That’s where I met Jan, Al, and Lynn—connections that quickly turned into friendships. By the end of the cruise, they felt like family.

It was Easter week, and the ship reflected it beautifully. Thoughtful seasonal touches—bunnies and festive décor—added charm without overwhelming the elegant atmosphere. These small details made the experience feel even more special and intentional.

One of the most memorable details of the journey was how AmaWaterways infused thoughtful surprises into everyday moments. On the second day, I returned to my cabin to find a beautifully placed gift waiting on the bed—an elegant scarf for women and a classic hat for men. It was such a simple yet meaningful gesture that made each guest feel personally welcomed. Then, on Easter, after a full day of excursions, I came back to find a Lindt chocolate bunny gently placed on my pillow. These small, intentional touches elevated the experience in a way that truly stayed with me.

One of the most impressive aspects of AmaWaterways is that excursions are included. Guests can pre-book options ranging from gentle to active—walking tours, biking, hiking, or coach experiences. There’s something for every pace and preference. And for those who want to stay active on board, there are wellness classes, including yoga, stretching, and circuit training.

On the second day, we were introduced to the wine presenters, Brian and Brandee, from Structure Cellars. While the wines were exceptional, what truly stood out was their authenticity. Their ability to connect with both their club members and new guests created a warm, inclusive atmosphere. It wasn’t just about wine—it was about relationships and shared experiences.

Each day brought a new adventure. From the charming harbor town of Honfleur—my personal favorite—to the modern contrast of Le Havre, every stop offered something unique. Guests could explore the Normandy Beaches, enjoy tastings in Pays d’Auge, visit a historic château, or take part in cultural experiences like a stop at Musée du Vin, cooking classes, and even an ice cream social.

Back onboard, the rhythm of the cruise continued beautifully. Sip & Sail cocktail hour at 6 pm brought everyone together, followed by exceptional dinners and live entertainment in the lounge. Vini and Tim, who managed the bar and lounge, elevated the experience with their incredible service and genuine connection with guests. Their attention to detail and warmth made every evening memorable.

The guest demographic ranged from travelers in their 40s to their 80s, proving that river cruising is for anyone who values culture, connection, and curated experiences. It was a diverse yet cohesive group, brought together by a shared appreciation for meaningful travel.

When it came time to disembark, the process was just as seamless as the journey itself. Luggage was collected outside the cabin, transportation was prearranged, and every detail was handled with precision and care. But what I didn’t expect was how difficult it would be to say goodbye.

In just one week on the river, something powerful had happened. The staff—who had shown up day after day with genuine care, warmth, and consistency—no longer felt like staff. They felt like family. The same was true for fellow sailors. Shared meals, excursions, laughter, and conversations had created bonds that went far beyond a typical travel experience.

There were hugs. Promises to stay in touch. That quiet understanding that something special had been experienced together—something not easily replicated.

This wasn’t just a cruise—it was a reminder of what travel can be when it’s done right. Intentional, effortless, and deeply connected. And as I stepped off the AmaLyra, one thing was certain—this was only the beginning of my journey with AmaWaterways.
